Pencils

Writer: Bashaba Gero Bashaba Gero

During my assignment, I got the opportunity to talk to one of the best English (language) student to one primary school in the outskirts of Kampala. Kigozi Emma told me about his love for pencils especially the very new ones because the rubber helps him clean the mistakes made before the teacher finds out. " my father always tells me to keep my pencils very well because he has to dig a very big piece of land in people's gardens in order to buy them for me." He added as he stopped and looked towards me. "When I'm in p3, I'll start using pens because our teacher told us so. Then I'll also study hard because My father works so hard and wants me to be a technician so that I'm able to connect electricity at home when I grow up. " said Emma, turning his face back to scribe a few spellings as I took this photo.

If only these dreams could stay real. If only the hope that burns in the tender souls of these children could not burn out as they grow, if only the love for a brighter future could be in every father's heart instead of alcohol, if only every child could have a great education and if only every child would be taught what they want to be or what their tallent was, in future, Uganda as a country would be greatly endowed with brilliant citizens in addition to it's beauty.
